19th Century Base Ball Kit

Now you can add a new element to your next reenactment or living history by playing a good old fashioned game of 19th century base ball !

- Stevenson, Alabama, April 28th, 1864;

"Well Clark, we have had lots of fun since we have been in Stevenson. We have some rousing old ball plays here but it has played out now. Something to do, playing ball, the kind that is played with a club. I ain't got much more time so I must bring this to a close. If nothing happens the next letter you receive from me will be from the front."

Taken from a letter written by Private Isaac "Ike" Foster, Co. G, 149th NYSV

( Used with permission of Peter Foster )

Back in the Civil War era, base ball was also known as "Town Ball", and had a slightly different set of rules.

Our "19th Century Base Ball" kit includes an authentically reproduced bat, and a reproduction ball".

Our kit also includes printed rules for several variations of the games of "Town Ball" and other 19th century baseball, the "New York Game" and the "Massachusetts Game".

The bat below is an authentic copy of a Civil War era Base Ball bat. Our bats are made of solid white ash and are hand turned here in the USA. Just as many originals, our bats retain the original lathe marks, have no modern labels or markings, and are hand finished with linseed oil. Each bat is authentically reproduced from a pattern and measurements of bats owned and displayed by the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, the home of Base Ball.

Each bat measures approximately 35"

   The 9 3/4" ball that is included with each kit features a hand sewn genuine leather cover with correct "lemon peel" finish, rubber core with yarn wound center and cotton stitching. These balls come highly recommended by today's modern players of vintage base ball for their accuracy of construction and ability to hold their shape in play. Made to slightly soften during play for the "dead ball" style of vintage play. Made here in the USA.
